CFB: ACC Atlantic Division
by Brian Hansen
The calendar will soon read July and that means August is on its way. Of course most of you probably already have this date circled on your calendar but Thursday, August 28th is when College Football's regular season kicks off in 2008 and that means it certainly is not too early to take a quick look at what we might expect from some of the teams around the country.
We'll get things started with some notes from the Atlantic Coast Conference as we take a look at their Atlantic Division in this installment:
Atlantic Division:
Boston College - Of course the loss of QB Matt Ryan was huge and this is a major negative for an Eagles team that lost 11 other starters from last season's team. This will certainly be a "step-back" year for the Eagles but one key that could help them surprise some teams is that they're very strong in the interior on both sides of the ball. The Eagles still have a strong offensive line and defensive line and this will help to win the battles in the trenches and that can lead to some overall victories on the field too.
Clemson - On paper this certainly looks like the most talented team in the conference. Also, they certainly are hungry after losing at home to Boston College in the ACC Title game. However, will there be much line value with this team considering so many eyes will be on them? Possibly not! That said it is best to be careful with this team and pick your spots.
Florida State - Even though the Seminoles have some players suspended for the first few games this season, they get a break since that is the lighter portion of their schedule. This team, with some improved offense, is a legitimate ACC contender. With some key experience in the skill positions on offense, this should finally be the year that FSU really makes some noise again. Keep in mind, the Noles lost some very tight games last season!
Maryland - Even though the Terrapins may look to be "hurt" coming into this season because they have so few returning starters, this is simply not the case. The "hurt" actually came last season when the Terps lost a number of key players to injury. What this has done for the Terrapins this season is that it means that they have more experience than you might think because players, other than the starters, gained some key experience last season.
Maryland's offensive line and their linebackers look like particular areas of strength and of course, these are key areas that can help them control the tempo of a game on both sides of the ball.
NC State - The Wolfpack lost a lot of veteran players from last season's team as they only have ten starters back and they lost nearly half their lettermen from last season! The only saving grace for this team is that they do have a lot of talent. It's just that it will take awhile for all the new players to get adjusted to each other and that means this should be a better team later in the season but a team to possibly just "watch" early in the season as there could definitely be an adjustment phase with the Wolfpack. It looks like defense will be a particular area of concern for NC State but they are talented in the offensive backfield.
Wake Forest - This offense could be the Achilles heel for this team. The Demon Deacons have had back to back solid seasons but they were outgained each season! Even though they do return a solid defense again this year, it is the offense that took some significant hits after last season and that could hurt them this season. That was already the weak area for the Deacons and now their receivers and offensive line are key areas of concern.
