I was in Boston Garden in 1986 when the Celtics beat Houston in Game 6 to win their 16th NBA Championship. I was also in the TD Bank North Garden to see Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals where the Celts took a 2-0 lead with a 108-102 win. Throughout that game it was obvious that the Lakers defensive shortcomings were going to keep them from winning the series. This was Kobe Bryant's team and if you looked at coach Phil Jackson's expression you knew that the Lakers had little chance of stopping the very cohesive Celtics.
Let’s fast forward to Game 4 in Los Angeles. The Lakers had a 24-point lead and the Celtics looked like they had no answers. Then the amazing Paul Pierce who happens to be from Los Angeles decided he was going to put his team on his shoulders. Pierce orchestrated one of the most amazing comebacks in NBA Playoff history to give the Celtics a three games to one lead in the Finals. As expected the Celts lost Game 5 in Los Angeles as they appeared to be a bit spent. The Celtics got on the airplane to Boston knowing that they needed just one win at home to be crowned Champions. What happened in Game 6 not even the Boston fans could have expected it. The Celtics left nothing to chance in Game 6 beating the Lakers by 39 points winning 131-92. It was the most lopsided closeout game in
NBA Finals history. Defense wins championships and the Celtics are living proof of that. After a 22-year wait, the Celtics will have Championship Banner Number 17 in the rafters.
